WINDOWS TIPS, TRICKS, AND SOLUTIONS
Customize Your Send To Function

.:Back To PC Repair:.

The Send To command is one of the best kept secrets in the world of Windows XP. This feature is used to transfer files and folders to other locations on your personal computer. This command is located in the text menu that you see whenever you right-click on a file or folder on your Desktop or Windows Explorer.

The Send To list is completely customizable and you can add any number of destinations to your customized list. Some of the things you may want to consider are: other computers on your network, printers, commonly used folders, utilities, and applications. In the latter case, when you send a file to an application the file is then opened within the application.

The Send To list is very easy to configure because each destination is nothing more than a shortcut placed in the C:\Documents and Settings\username\SendTo folder, where the user name is the same as the user’s logon name. Therefore, to extend your Send To capabilities, all you have to do is add a short cut to that particular folder.

The simplest ways to add a shortcut to the SendTo folder is to right-click on a particular folder, file, drive, printer, or application and drag it into the SendTo folder. I know what you’re asking, where do I find the SendTo folder and how do I open it. To access the SendTo folder you can go to Start -> Run, type sendto and click OK. An alternative way to add a shortcut to the SendTo folder is to simply open the folder and use the Create Shortcut Wizard:

  • Right-click in an empty spot in the SendTo folder and select New -> Shortcut from the pop-up menu.
  • In the first screen in the Create Shortcut Wizard, type the full destination path name or click the browse button and locate the destination in this manner.
  • Click next and in the Select A Name For The Shortcut box, type a short description that you would like to name this particular shortcut and then click Next.
  • Select an icon for your shortcut and then click Finish.
